As tick follows tock, Hello Games has announced and released another major update to No Man’s Sky. The Endurance update (version 3.94) makes significant changes to the flexibility and customisation of your home freighter, adds organic frigates to the range of ships you can have in your fleet, and looks to make space itself more engaging with enhanced nebulae, asteroid belts and storms.

Some of this might sound familiar, of course. After the August 2016 launch of No Man’s Sky – the game is just a month away from its sixth anniversary – the first major update that arrived in November of that year, known as the Foundation Update, added base building to the game as well as the ability to purchase starship freighters to act as their interstellar base. While base building has been retrofitted and enhanced in numerous ways over the intervening years, freighters have largely remained unchanged.

Endurance brings plenty of major improvements, then. You have a large set of new parts and themed rooms so that you can more readily customise and expand your freighter, with agricultural modules and exterior building both possible, portholes and windows to space outside, and the ship will be a hive of activity as your crew meanders around, displaying their idle thoughts to you. Frigate captains and squadron pilots will also return to your capital ship periodically.

Commanding your fleet from the bridge, you’ll appreciate that it’s been given big overhaul, and you’ll also enjoy the quality of life improvement so that you can teleport to your freighter from any space station or planetary base.

This ties in with the new Polestar expedition, which will task you with repairing this freighter’s unique technology and uncovering its past.

Outside your ships, there’s been efforts to make space even prettier to look at. Nebulae have been enhanced to appear even more dramatic, while asteroid belts are now less uniform and appear in more dense clusters with a wider array of shapes, sizes and colours. You could also run into space storms that will affect your deep space adventures in dramatic fashion.
